Interview with Kal Sangha

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Kal, a dedicated dental hygienist in Calgary, who plays a crucial role in ensuring the oral health and hygiene of the community.

To start off, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey into the field of dental hygiene?

Absolutely. I was born in London Borough of Redbridge, England and immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada as a young child.  I spent most of childhood growing up in Winnipeg and after high school I attended the University of Winnipeg to obtain my prerequisites for Dental Hygiene.  After which I  attended the University of Manitoba where I graduated from the Dental Hygiene program. Most of my professional career has been here in Calgary.  I have definitely found my calling in promoting oral health. I believe that a healthy smile contributes to overall well-being, and I’m committed to making a positive impact in the lives of my patients.

That’s wonderful. Can you share some insights into the role of a dental hygienist and the importance of their work?

Certainly. Dental hygienists are key members of the dental care team. Our primary focus is on preventive care, which includes a periodontal assessment,  professional teeth cleanings, educating patients on proper oral hygiene practices, and conducting screenings for potential issues. By promoting preventive measures, we aim to help our patients avoid more serious dental problems down the line.

It sounds like a crucial role. What sets your approach apart, particularly in Calgary?

In Calgary, we have a diverse and vibrant community. I believe in tailoring my approach to meet the unique needs of each patient. Whether it’s working with children, adults, or seniors, I strive to create a comfortable and friendly environment. Building trust and communication is key to providing personalized care.

That’s an important aspect of patient care. Are there any specific challenges or rewarding moments you’ve encountered in your career?

Like any profession, there are challenges, but the moments that truly stand out are when I see positive changes in my patients’ oral health. Witnessing a patient develop better habits or overcome dental issues is incredibly rewarding. It reinforces the importance of what we do as dental hygienists.

Can you elaborate on your role in dental consulting and how it complements your work in the clinic setting?

Certainly. Dental consulting has become a passion project for me. It involves working with other dental professionals and clinics to optimize their operations, enhance patient experiences, and streamline their overall approach to dental care. It’s rewarding to share insights and best practices to help elevate the standard of dental services in the community.

It sounds like a dynamic and multifaceted role. What aspects of your work are you particularly excited about in the context of the new clinic?

The exciting part for me is being part of something new and innovative. In the Uxbridge clinic, we’re implementing the latest technologies and patient-centered approaches to provide the best possible care. I’m thrilled to see the positive impact we can make on the oral health and well-being of our community.

Absolutely. Finally, for those in Calgary looking for dental care, Kal what advice would you give them in maintaining a healthy smile?

I would emphasize the significance of regular dental check-ups and dental hygiene visits. Prevention is key, and early detection of any issues can make a significant difference. Additionally, maintaining a consistent at-home oral hygiene routine, including brushing, flossing, and a balanced diet, is crucial for a healthy smile.
