Note (2026): Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is not currently offered at Uxbridge Dental Care. This post is kept as a historical overview of the approach Kal Sangha described in early 2024. For current hygiene care at our clinic, see our dental hygiene page or contact us.

In early conversations about dental hygiene innovation, Kal Sangha shared information about Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) — an approach designed to support biofilm removal and patient education. Dr. Gunadi and Kal were interested in the method at the time and wanted patients to understand how it works in general.

Curious about the steps involved? Descriptions of GBT typically begin with a thorough assessment by a dentist and dental hygienist, evaluating biofilm in the mouth. A disclosing dye may be applied to the teeth as a visual aid revealing plaque/biofilm buildup — a tool that can help patients see the areas that need attention and take a more collaborative approach to their dental health.

GBT, as described in that conversation, uses a device that combines water, air, and fine powder particles to help remove biofilm and stains. It is often discussed as less abrasive than traditional polishing for some patients. Ultrasonic scaling and manual instrumentation may still be used afterward to remove calculus (tartar) and remaining biofilm.

After biofilm removal, fluoride may be applied to help fortify tooth enamel. Uxbridge Dental offers fluoride varnish as part of appropriate preventive care.

Approaches like GBT are also used in some practices as a teaching moment: hygienists and dentists can talk through brushing, flossing, dental aids, and lifestyle or dietary factors that affect oral health.

At Uxbridge Dental, GBT was explored as a possible future option in 2024. It was not added as a current clinic service. For questions about hygiene visits today, contact the team.

Your dedicated hygienist, Kal.
