Why Professional Dental Hygiene Matters

Plaque (biofilm) and hardened deposits can collect in places daily brushing and flossing may miss. Professional cleaning helps support healthier teeth and gums.

Your appointment

What Happens During a Dental Hygiene Visit?

Your hygiene appointment may vary based on your oral health, gum health, previous care and the services recommended for you.

  1. Relevant History Review

We review helpful health and dental information related to your hygiene visit.

  2. Hygiene and Gum Assessment

Your hygienist assesses current teeth, gums and hygiene needs.

  3. Plaque, Biofilm and Calculus Removal

Professional cleaning removes deposits that home care may miss.

  4. Polishing Where Appropriate

Polishing may be included when suitable for your teeth and clinical needs.

  5. Personalized Home-Care Guidance

You receive practical recommendations tailored to your mouth and routine.

  6. Dentist Assessment or Imaging When Appropriate

A dentist exam or imaging may be coordinated when clinically indicated or already scheduled — not automatically at every hygiene visit.

Individualized timing

How Often Should You Have Your Teeth Cleaned?

There is no universal “every six months” rule that fits everyone. Recommended cleaning frequency depends on your situation.

  • Gum health
  • Plaque or calculus buildup
  • How well home care is working for you
  • Dental and medical history
  • Current treatment needs

When Should You Book a Dental Hygiene Appointment?

These are common, non-diagnostic reasons people book professional cleaning — not a diagnosis on their own.

Due or Overdue

It has been a while since your last professional cleaning, or you are due for routine hygiene.

You notice deposits on your teeth that brushing does not seem to remove.

Bleeding Gums

Gums bleed when you brush or floss — a common reason people book hygiene care.

FAQ

Dental Hygiene Questions

What happens during a dental hygiene appointment?

Your hygiene appointment may vary based on your oral health, gum health, previous care and the services recommended for you. Visits often include a review of relevant history, assessment of hygiene needs, removal of plaque/biofilm and calculus, polishing where appropriate, and personalized home-care guidance. A dentist exam or imaging is included only when clinically appropriate or already scheduled.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

There is no single schedule that fits every patient. Recommended frequency depends on factors such as gum health, buildup, home care, history and current treatment needs. Your dental team can recommend an interval that fits your situation.

Is a dental cleaning the same as a dental exam?

No. A hygiene visit focuses on professional cleaning and gum/oral-hygiene assessment. A dentist examination is a related but separate assessment and is not automatically included in every cleaning. Broader dental care is covered on our general and family dentistry page.

Do I need X-rays at every hygiene appointment?

Not necessarily. Diagnostic imaging is recommended only where clinically appropriate. Existing records and the reason for your visit may affect whether new X-rays are needed.

What is plaque or tartar buildup?

Plaque is a soft biofilm that forms on teeth. When it hardens, it becomes calculus (tartar), which professional cleaning can remove more effectively than home care alone.

Can a dental hygienist help if my gums bleed?

Bleeding when brushing or flossing is a common reason people book a hygiene visit. Your hygienist can assess your gums and discuss appropriate hygiene care and home-care support. This does not diagnose a specific gum condition on its own.

What if I haven't had my teeth cleaned in a long time?

You are welcome to return. Tell our team when booking so we can plan an appropriate visit. Care is individualized — there is no judgment for time away from the dentist.

Does Uxbridge accept new hygiene patients?

Yes. Uxbridge Dental Care welcomes new patients for dental hygiene and teeth cleaning at our University Heights clinic in NW Calgary.

Does Uxbridge direct bill dental insurance?

Uxbridge direct bills most dental insurance plans. Coverage varies by plan and service, and patients remain responsible for amounts not covered. Hygiene is not guaranteed to be fully covered by any plan.

Does CDCP cover dental hygiene appointments?

Uxbridge welcomes new CDCP patients and direct bills Sun Life for eligible covered services. Whether a hygiene visit is covered, and any patient portion, depends on eligibility, program rules, frequency limits and the services provided. Learn more on our CDCP page.
