Root canal treatment — also called endodontic treatment — removes inflamed, infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the root canal system, then restores the tooth with an appropriate filling, crown or other restoration.

Persistent pain, lingering temperature sensitivity, biting pain, swelling, deep decay, cracks, trauma or new symptoms around a previously treated tooth may warrant assessment. Only a dental examination can determine whether root canal treatment is appropriate.

Not always. After root canal treatment the tooth needs an appropriate restoration. Depending on remaining structure and function, that may be a filling, crown or another approach — not a universal crown requirement.

No. Not every tooth can be predictably retained. Restorability, tooth structure and other clinical factors guide whether root canal treatment or another option is more appropriate.
